Also acts on (3S,4R)-ketose 1-phosphates. The enzymes increase electron-attraction by the carbonyl group, some (Class I) forming a protonated imine with it, others (Class II), mainly of microbial origin, polarizing it with a metal ion, e.g. zinc. |
||||
Class-I aldolase: mainly found in higher
eukaryotes, are homotetrameric enzymes which form a Schiff-base intermediate
between the C-2 carbonyl group of the substrate (dihydroxyacetone phosphate)
and the epsilon-amino group of a lysine residue. |
|||||
Class-II aldolases: mainly found in prokaryotes and
fungi, are homodimeric enzymes which require a divalent metal ion generally
zinc - for their activity. |
