Alternative Name(s)
Arginine amidinase
Canavanase
Class
3.Hydrolases
5.Acting on carbon-nitrogen bonds, other than peptide bonds
3.In linear amidines
Catalysed reaction
L-arginine + H2O L-ornithine + urea
Substrates
L-arginine
a-N-Substituted L-arginine
Canavanine
H2O
Products
L-ornithine
urea
Cofactor(s)
Manganese
Metabolic Pathways
Other comments

Also hydrolyzes alpha-N-substituted L-arginines and canavanine.

Belongs to a group of evolutionary related enzymes. These enzymes are proteins of about 300 amino-acid residues. Three conserved regions that contain charged residues which are involved in the binding of the two manganese ions can be used as signature patterns.
